In the early 1900's the shotgun style houses of Project Row Houses were a part of a bustling community life in Third Ward. Back porch visits; playful children, colorful flowers and clotheslines were all part of this small village. Project Row Houses (PRH) rescued 22 of these shotgun style homes in the heart of Third Ward and they are now a center for art and cultural education programs, which celebrate African American history and culture and provide community services. PRH has dedicated 7 of these houses to the Young Mothers Residential Program (YMRP).

Since February of 1996 the YMRP has offered one year renewable contracts for young single mothers and their children who are provided free housing while they work part time, further their education and participate in twice weekly formal programming including: individual and group counseling; job/life skills training; and parenting programs. The goal of the YMRP is to assist single mothers and their children in achieving independent, self-sufficient, lives through their residency in a positive emotional, physical, economic, and social community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Young mothers wishing to apply must: be between the ages of 18 and 26; be single parents and working toward a high school diploma, a GED, or some further educational/career training goal as a full-time student. Applicants must also be willing to honor YMRP scheduled program commitments including twice weekly meetings and programs that support a yearlong focus on self-growth and strengthening of parenting skills.

Those wishing to apply for residency in the Young Mothers Residential Program, are encouraged to visit the main office to obtain and complete an application. After the application is completed an appointment will be set up for a private tour of Project Row Houses including an interview with the applicant and family. Following the interview, we will make every effort to contact applicants with a decision on their residency at PRH as soon as possible.

Project Row Houses' mission is to create community through the celebration of arts and African-American history and culture. We are honored to be able to celebrate the family and create community through our efforts with the YMRP.
