El Dorado Ballroom Series

2005

April 4, 2005 @ 7:00pm
Concert benefiting Selven O'Keef Jarmon's African Rondavel Collective (ARC) Project.
Omari will be accompanied by Phillip Hall on Keyboards
Backup singers: Liz Vaughn and Moyo Imbuyu

Omari Tau is a singer with opera, jazz, avant-garde classical, musical theater, and R&B music in his blood. While he attributes much of his vocal style to the influence of the church, his in-depth study of classical voice, composition, education and contemporary vocal interpretation have also greatly shaped him. As a result, Omari’s approach to song selection and interpretation are truly unique. His songs may include 19th century German lieder, jazz standards, contemporary music theatre, or even 1980's dancehall. All are spun together to create a musical collage.

Presently touring with Disney's The Lion King, Omari also performs as a solo artist in varying venues, most recently San Francisco's historic blues hall, The Boom Boom Room, as well as Chicago's Cultural Arts Center as the season opener to their Fall jazz series. In addition to working in the recording studio on his debut album, he is writing and producing a performance piece featuring African-American spirituals and folk-tales which are interpreted through word, song, dance and image.

This concert at the El Dorado Ballroom features songs that reflect upon the essence of "journey". Whether physical or spiritual, they encompass a soulful, jazzy, funky and folky sound that best express Omari's musical home.

In Houston, Omari has performed at the Alley Theatre, Theatre Under The Stars, Opera In The Heights, The Moores Opera Center, Main Street Theater and with many other local organizations.
