Row Houses CDC Since the early 1990’s, inner-city Houston has experienced unprecedented development. However, unfortunately the new development has resulted in the wholesale demolition of blocks of single-family bungalow, decimating community and cultural traditions along with dislocated residents. In response to the gentrification of the area, Project Row House assembled the Row House District Collaborative, a group of resident artists and experts within and outside the Third Ward, to envision the community’s future. The collaborative drafted a plan that preserves and protects existing families while attracting diverse new and returning residents to invest in our community. To implement this plan, PRH created a sister organization, the Row House Community Development Corporation (RHCDC). The mission of RHCDC is to develop housing for low to moderate income resident, public space and facilities to preserve and protect the historic character of the Third Ward. The four new duplexes completed October of 2004. Rice University architecture students led by faculty members Danny Samuels and Nonya Grenader formed the Rice Building Workshop (RBW) to design and build housing that blends into our historic context. RBW’s collaboration with PRH/RHCDC was recently awarded one of only five national NCARB Prizes for “creative integration of practice and education in the academy.
